Marking 75 Years of UN with mayors Ahmeti and Popovic
This year the COVID-19 pandemics unleashed an unprecedented crisis revealing the vulnerability of global systems to protect the society, health, economy and environment. It also reversed the progress achieved towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is against this backdrop that we marked UN Day on October 24, celebrating 75 years since the United Nations came into existence, and offering our support to recover back and rebuild the wellbeing of the society. UN Kosovo Team reaffirms its support to recover back better and rebuild the wellbeing of society in Kosovo
To celebrate UN75 in the framework and spirit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN Kosovo Team donated 100 trees to the Municipality of Lipjan/Lipljane and 100 trees to the Municipality of Gracanica/e.
In Lipjan/Lipljane, the trees were planted in the newly established recreational park in this municipality, creating a peaceful and healthy green environment for the citizens. Event was joined by UNKT Development Coordinator Ulrika Richardson, Heads of UN Agencies, Representatives from UK Embassy in Kosovo, EULEX Kosovo, and Municipality representatives lead by Mayor Imri Ahmeti. Mayor Ahmeti expressed his gratitude for the continuous support of UN Family in Kosovo, conveying his readiness for further cooperation in recovering back from pandemics and attaining sustainable development goals.
Development Coordinator, Ulrika Richardson, spoke of UN activities in Kosovo and powerful symbolic that new trees pose, as well as importance of parks to the wellbeing of people and communities.
Mayor Imri Ahmeti, spoke of the importance of the local communities to the development on the global level and that more trees contribute to cleaner environment.
The 100 trees donated to the Municipality of Gracanica/e were planted in the yard of the newly build sports centre in Llaplje selo/Llapnaselle. We planted few of the trees symbolically along with Mayor Popovic and his staff, UN Kosovo Team representatives, deputy Ambassador of UK Embassy in Kosovo, Consulate of the Russian Federation in Kosovo, and EULEX Kosovo representative.
Mayor Srđan Popovic emphasised the positive role of UN entities and their cooperation with municipality, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. He stressed that events like this remind us that we need to take care of environment, so we can take care of people, their health, welfare and economy.
IOM Head of Office Anna Rostocka, reminded us that by planting tree and taking care of environment, we tackle the main reason for people’s migration in the recent decades the climate change and thus we contribute to making migration a more of a choice and not a necessity.
UNHCR’s Chief of Mission in Kosovo, Erol Arduc, quoted a beautiful poem by the Turkish author Nazim Hikmet: ““To live! like a tree alone and free, To live! like a forest in brotherhood/sisterhood…”, reminding all of us that only together we can build better. On its 75th birthday, while the society continues to tackle this unprecedented health, economic and social crisis, UN Kosovo Team called on solidarity, unity and cooperation to support most vulnerable groups, communities and entities affected by the pandemics.
