    Background

Every year International Human Rights Day (IHRD) is celebrated on 10 December, to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly, on 10 December 1948. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.

    International Human Rights Day 2016

This year’s theme  Stand Up for Someone’s Rights  calls each of us to make a difference and step forward and defend the rights of anyone at risk of discrimination or violence.

In connection with this theme, we plan to hold a Living Library session, where the books are real people sharing their stories focusing on discrimination and standing for the rights of those discriminated against.

The Living Library is an equalities tool that seeks to challenge prejudice and discrimination. It works just like a normal library: visitors can browse the catalogue for the available titles, choose the Book they want to read, and borrow it for a limited period of time. After reading, they return the Book to the library and, if they want, they can borrow another. The only difference is that in the Living Library, Books are people, and reading consists of a conversation.

The event is envisaged to take place in the bookshop Dit e Nat in the centre of Pristina, in the afternoon of 7 December 2016, for approximately three hours, during which five to six selected “books” share their stories simultaneously. Each “book” shall present his/her story (approximately 30-45 minutes) around a table and engage in discussion with his/her audience, with the help of a facilitator.

The suggested timeframe of the Living library shall be as follows:

    • First reading of shall start around 4:30 and last until 5:30.
    • Second reading shall start at 6:30, lasting until 7:30. If the visitors and books will be interested, they can continue in their discussions.

In between the readings, a session with key note addresses by representatives of involved organizations and distribution of certificates of appreciation to the “books” can be held.  Subject to authorization of the “books”, pictures and videos of the story-telling and ensuing discussions will be taken, to be published on 10 December.

The intended target group of the event is youth.  It is hoped that this activity will help to increase youth’s awareness and understanding of human rights of persons belonging to minorities or groups discriminated against, at the same time providing a cultural event for residents in Pristina.

    Partnership:

The event is organized by UNMIK/OHCHR Joint Human Rights Office in cooperation with OSCE mission in Kosovo, the Council of Europe Office in Pristina, and European Union Office in Kosovo.
