Press Release
IPKO Foundation, with support from USAID- ASSET Program, UNKT, UNFPA, UNICEF, and UN Women, is marking the international Girls Child Day!
In recognition of the challenges faced by girls, in 2011, the United Nations (UN) declared the 11th of October as the International Girl Child Day. This day aims to promote the empowerment of girls, address the needs and challenges the girls face and the fulfillment of their rights.
IPKO Foundation for the fifth consecutive year marks International Girls Child Day with various activities, and this year we are delighted to be working alongside our partners such as USAID- ASSET Program, UN Kosovo Team, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN Women, in supporting all girls to amplify their voices and stand up for their rights.
This year’s theme “GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable” will focus on highlighting the brave girls and women who are breaking barriers in a dominated single-gender occupation, with particular emphasis on the ICT sector.
Today, girls are moving from dreaming to achieving. More are attending school and gaining the skills they need to excel in the future world of work. Girls are breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalized communities. International Day of the Girl 2019 brings together partners and stakeholders to equip girls with the power, knowledge, and space to continue to voice their passions and concerns. This day also marks a big step towards fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5, which calls for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, everywhere by 2030.
During this day, 35 young girls (10-18 years old) from 6 municipalities in Kosovo will come to Prishtina and take part in 5 immersive workshops related to technology, education, music, and art. In addition, the girls will have the chance to be part of two study-visits, taking place in the Telemedicine Center of Kosovo and at Jaha Solar. There they will have the opportunity to observe the every-day work it takes to run such institutions, meet other women with profiles and professions that are traditionally dominated by one gender.
