GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable; International Girl Child Day in Kosovo 2019

International Day of the Girl Child is observed on 11 October every year since 2012. Its main purpose is to raise awareness about the challenges that girls’ face, such as the need for empowerment and fulfillment of their human rights. This year’s theme is “GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable“.
UN Kosovo Team with its entities supported numerous events that marked the occasion and they have shown support for raising awareness on issues that girls might face in their childhood.
Workshop and Info Sessions on the theme of GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstopable by IPKO Foundation was supported by USAID After School Support Program (ASSET), UN Kosovo Team, UN WOMEN, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP and UNDCO. The activity started at Xhevdet Doda High School and continued at tech production sites in Pristina until 16:00 p.m. The event was also attended by girls from schools in Fushe Kosove/Kosovo Polje, Obiliq/c and Gracanica/e. Later during the day, a lecture was held at the Faculty of Philosophy from 13:00 p.m., followed by a Bicycle Parade at Zahir Pajaziti Square in Pristina from 17:00 p.m. The activity, inspired by this year’s theme of GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable, was organised by SuperBabai & Peer Educations Network and supported by UNFPA. From 14:00 p.m., a Mural Painting entitled “Stamp it!” by the contextual artist Alketa Xhafa Mripa, was being painted at the student dormitories of the University of Pristina. The evening continued with a screening of messages from “Stamp it!” at Skanderbeg Square/the main government building in Pristina (19:00-20:30 p.m). “You are Never too Young to Lead and Bring Justice” by the contextual artist Alketa Xhafa Mripa, along with 158 messages, were being displayed on the building. While families and friends watched the screening, kids expressed their creativity with chalk drawings on the pavement of the Square. During the day, UN Development Coordinator, Ms. Ulrika Richarson, and Head of UN Women in Kosovo, Ms. Vlora Tuzi Nushi, participated on RTK 3’s talkshow and discussed the importance of International Girl Child Day. Ms. Ulrika Richarson emphasised the need to implement already existing laws and taking affirmative measures for girls.
